Switchgears

2.1. Definition

Switchgear: Switchgear is a collection of electrical devices used to control, protect, and isolate electrical circuits and equipment. It includes circuit breakers, switches, fuses, and other protective devices.

2.2. Functions

  • Control: Switchgear enables the switching of electrical circuits and equipment on and off, allowing for operational control and maintenance.
  • Protection: It provides protection against electrical faults, such as short circuits and overloads, by disconnecting faulty circuits and preventing damage.
  • Isolation: Switchgear allows for the isolation of electrical circuits or equipment for maintenance or repair without affecting the rest of the system.

2.3. Types

  • Low Voltage Switchgear: Designed for use in low voltage applications (up to 1 kV), it includes devices such as miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current devices (RCDs), and distribution boards.
  • Medium Voltage Switchgear: Used for medium voltage applications (1 kV to 36 kV), it includes devices like vacuum circuit breakers, air-insulated switchgear (AIS), and gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).
  • High Voltage Switchgear: For high voltage applications (above 36 kV), it includes equipment like circuit breakers, isolators, and bus bars designed to handle high power levels.
